@Scot Mahler - Hmmm... That sounds like the definition for marketing. Social media platforms are a venue for transmitting awareness of your brand. Getting the public to know who a person is, is not branding, it facilitates the ability to display, demonstrate or communicate their branding.

Remember "<strong>Marketing is the doing</strong>" and "<strong>Branding is the being</strong>"

It helps fulfill the:

	Build awareness.
	Build trust.
	Build popularity.

"Instead good personal branding includes the following examples:

Attention to detail.
Promptness.
Honesty and integrity.
Fairness.
Happiness.
Sincerity.
Diligence.
Cleanliness.
And so on...

Personally someone could be seriously lacking in all the above and could be a rotten individual - and that would be their brand! They could use social media to connect with people and express the opposite, but their poor brand would quickly become evident. For example, any logo they create (no matter how nice it looked) would still signify a poor brand.

On the flip side of the coin, someone can have great branding but express it poorly. Here's and example: http://isell.wordpress.com/2008/01/25/top-6-failed-advertising-texts-and-brand-names/

So we should also remember not to confuse personal branding with marketing.

When someone use social media, that's the "doing" (marketing). When they demonstrate quality service for example, that's the "being" (personal branding).

To me branding is about getting the public to know who you are and what you, your company and your service or products are about. Yes, as you say, that includes tools like logos and tag lines, but that doesn't give your customers/clients an true insight into what they can expect from you. That's why I love social media so much. You have the platform to really get to now your customers and potential customers on a much deeper level. On top of that, these type of sites give you an amazing opportunity to listen, and listening to what the public is saying about you, is one of the best ways to ensure you are branding yourself in the right way.
